Airline Ticket Fares
Here’s a 1970 ad for the now defunct Eastern Airlines. As a kid, Eastern was always my favorite… they always handed out the little plastic pin-back wings to the kids… I still have several pair of them around here somewhere. Visit my blog at timewarptv.blogspot.com

Weren’t Soviet military craft painted and included as “Aeroflot?” I imagine that would make the airline significantly larger.

Before the end of the Cold War, Aeroflot was the single, largest airline in the world.

aeroflot was the largest carrier in the world during the cold war. Pan Am was second overall and first in the west (free world)… from a marketing standpoint 2nd sounds a lot better than 3rd

Every ad like before 2000 said that “the are the largest or second or third or whatever! in the free world. Why? Are communist airlines more popular or what?

It’s Orson (needing the money, as usual, lending his distinctive voice to a number of services and products during the ’70s and ’80s to sustain his extravagant lifestyle- he was usually “in the red”). Paul Frees was one of the few people who could deliver an accurate impression of him, but Eastern settled for the “genuine article”.

do you have any examples of the ads with Alexander Scourby?
December 13th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I couldn’t compare Orson Welles’ and Paul Frees’ voices together…

no, its definitely orson welles

In previous years, Eastern used Alexander Scourby’s distinctive voice in their ads…

the narrator sounded so evil for me

If I hadn’t seen your comment I would have guessed orson welles, sounds incredibly similar.

Ah, yes….Boris Badenoff from the old “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoons. Frees was a classic talent.
